Woman Attacks Children With Screwdriver

Two young children were hit with a screwdriver in Hoffman Estates Monday afternoon in what police believe to be a random act of violence.

Jessica M. Zander, 26, of the 7100 block of Barry Street in Rosemont, faces felony charges including aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and aggravated battery to a child, police said.

At 1:10 p.m. Monday, a 2-year-old boy and 1-year-old girl were playing in their front yard with their mother in the 1700 block of Burr Ridge Drive when a woman allegedly approached the children and beat them with a screwdriver, police said.

"It's just crazy and luckily, we got her off the street," said Hoffman Estates Police Sgt. Darin Felgenhauer.

The children were not seriously hurt and were not hospitalized, police said. The screwdriver did not cut into them.
