Asteroid to squeak by Earth?

The best view of the asteroid that will squeak past us on February 15 at a distance of just over 17,000 miles will be from Indonesia, say NASA scientists. If it were to hit the Earth, it would pack a punch of 2.5 megatons of TNT - enough to wipe out a city.

2 Men Threatened girls with baseball bats

Two Chicago men armed with a baseball bat are accused of trying to rob two 15-year-old girls during an attack  on Friday night that was foiled by two off duty police officers, police said.

Carlos Alvizo, 18, of the 5600 block of South Homan Avenue and Elias Martinez, 21, of the 2300 block of South Trumbull Avenue were both charged with two counts of attempted armed robbery of two 15-year-old girls that happened in the 3600 block South Hoyne Avenue in the city’s McKinley Park neighborhood, police said.

One of the suspects was wielding a baseball bat as they demanded “everything’’ from the girls, according to a police report.

One said: “Give me everything. I don’t want to whack you. Do you have any money? Do you have your cell phone? What do you have in your pocket?”’ according to the report.
Alvizo reached into a pocket of one of victims before but both men fled when they spotted two people – who happened to be off duty police officers from Chicago and Forest Park – who began running after them, the report said.

Both men jumped into a gray Dodge Neon but as Martinez turned on its ignition the officers were able to stop them before they drove away in the car, police said.
The girls later identified them and they were arrested

No to same-sex wedding cakes

Gay wedding cakes?

GRESHAM, Ore -- The Oregon Department of Justice is looking into a complaint that a Gresham bakery refused to make a wedding cake for a same sex marriage.
It started on Jan. 17 when a mother and daughter showed up at Sweet Cakes by Melissa looking for the perfect wedding cake.

"My first question is what's the wedding date," said owner Aaron Klein.  "My next question is bride and groom's name ... the girl giggled a little bit and said it's two brides."
Klein apologized to the women and told them he and his wife do not make cakes for same-sex marriages.  Klein said the women were disgusted and walked out.

"I believe that marriage is a religious institution ordained by God," said Klein.  "A man should leave his mother and father and cling to his wife ... that to me is the beginning of marriage."
At the advice of their attorney, the women are not speaking to the media, but they have plenty of support.  Numerous people have blasted the Klein's on the internet.

What Klein wants to make clear is that he and his wife do not hate homosexuals.
"They can buy my stuff," said Klein.  "I'll sell them stuff ... I'll talk to them, it's fine."
What is not fine, according to Klein, is a marriage between people of the same sex.  He will always stand by that conviction.

"I'd rather have my kids see their dad stand up for what he believes in then to see him bow down because one person complained."
ORS 659A.403 is the law in question.  In short, it prohibits discrimination in places of public accommodation.  Klein and his wife have two weeks to respond to the Oregon Department of Justice's inquiry into what happened.

Cocaine Diapers

Two Bronx women were arrested after allegedly attempting to smuggle cocaine in diapers through John F. Kennedy International Airport Saturday.
Priscilla Pena and Michelle Blassingale were caught wearing "cocaine diapers" when they arrived at JFK Airport after a JetBlue flight from the Dominican Republic, CBS New York reports.
Pena was selected for search after a drug-sniffing dog alerted airport officials to something around Pena's midsection.
