CORBIN, Ky. - Investigators believer they're closer to figuring out the name of the person whose bones were found in a Corbin storage unit.
Thursday, someone found the bones in a storage unit on Highway 25. Now police believe the bones could be from a woman reported missing in Delaware 16 years ago.
Steven Terry was going through some DVD’s and odds and ends from a storage unit he’d just bought at an auction when he and his father made a shocking discovery.
“I was moving some of them…..yellow bag that was rolled up. I told him..looked like some bones in there,” Terry said.
One looked like a jawbone..others looked like ribs. He took the bones to the office and police were called and the dispatcher got quite a story.
“A guy worked for me a little while his wife disappeared. Everyone thought he killed her,” the caller is heard telling a 911 dispatcher in tapes.
The caller says that man supposedly died and the storage unit was sold to Terry. And his purchase may have helped crack a 16-year-old cold case.
“We’re following an active lead. Missing person case out of Delaware. From 1997,” said Det. Rusty Hedrick with Corbin Police.
Police in New Castle County, Delaware say positive identification is yet to be made but the remains could be that of Doris Anne Wood, 42, who was last seen on July 28th, 1997 when she went to go see her sister but never arrived.
“That would be great if a family could get closure from this. If somebody was missing,” said Terry.
No one was ever charged in the missing person case but Wood’s husband, Robert, was questioned. He has family in Kentucky.
“Corbin police did assist authorities at that time with some cadaver dogs, Believe it was the same case,” said Det. Hedrick.
Medical examiners in Delaware are currently working with those from Kentucky to make a positive identification.
