Teen charged with decapitating his mother

An 18-year-old in North Carolina has been charged with first-degree murder after authorities said he decapitated his mother Monday afternoon.

Sheriff Kent Winstead says the first officer on scene found the teenager with a knife in one hand and his mother’s head in the other.

"When they arrived, he was with the decapitation in his hand, and it was a gruesome scene. The oldest son killed his mother. It looked to be a large butcher knife, the weapon that was used. I can't tell you how many wounds,” Winstead said.

Investigators say the suspect, Oliver Funez, placed his mother’s head on the ground and was taken into custody. The body was found inside the home.

Two young girls were also home at the time, but they do not appear to be injured.
Resident Randy Mullins says he drove by the scene shortly after the deputy arrived. He can’t forget the look on that officer’s face.

"He just looked like he was just blown away. I mean, he was just in terror. He was just so upset,” Mullins said.

Investigators say Funez was the one who called 911, and he stayed on the line with officers until they arrived.

Funez is now charged with first-degree murder.
