41 charged in insurance scam involving dead deer

Yikes!
Forty-one people in Philadelphia are facing charges in what prosecutors call an elaborate insurance fraud scheme that used dead deer to fake car accidents.

Ronald Galati Sr. is accused of running a $5 million scam out of his auto body shop.
District Attorney Seth Williams said Wednesday that Galati coached customers to claim they'd struck a deer rather than a car. That way, insurance companies would consider them "no fault" accidents and pay the claims without raising the customers' premiums.
Investigators say Galati stored deer carcasses, blood and fur in the back of his shop to use as props.
Also charged are Galati's wife, son and daughter, several insurance adjusters, tow truck drivers, a city official and a police officer.
Defense attorney Anthony Voci said he couldn't comment specifically on the charges because he hadn't seen the grand jury presentment but that his client is innocent until proven guilty.

The Weed Fairy visits Seattle, gives out pot

Weed Fairy?

A woman who calls herself the "Weed Fairy" distributed free nuggets of marijuana to people in Seattle over Memorial Day weekend, taping the free pot on fliers around a city neighborhood.
The woman, 23-year-old Yeni Sleidi, says she does it to amuse people and to give them a break from everyday stress.

She said 50 fliers had nuggets taped to them.
"People mostly laughed," Sleidi said Wednesday.

The woman said she first came up with the idea in New York, where she lived during the government shutdown, because several of her friends were affected by it. She wanted to distract them from the stress. Her actions, though, drew plenty of coverage from the media.

"I'm not sure what the thought process was but I thought people would be amused by it," she said.
The fliers posted in Seattle came with the message: "These are tough times. Take this weed." Sleidi posted her free marijuana in one of Seattle's most urban neighborhoods, known for its nightlife and counterculture.

Washington is one of two states that legalized recreational marijuana in 2012.
Sleidi said it was the first time she felt comfortable with attaching her name to her deeds.
"I felt so relaxed about it... I wouldn't feel comfortable doing it elsewhere in the country," she said.
A call to the Seattle Police Department to ask about the pot distribution effort was not immediately returned.

Mayor vows to shut down park district-owned gun range!

Harvey Mayor Eric J. Kellogg adjourns a city council meeting. (Scott Strazzante, Chicago Tribune)

Declaring that bullets are landing in neighbors’ yards, the mayor of Harvey pledged Thursday to shut down a gun range in the south suburb despite objections from the Harvey Park District, which owns the property.

The executive order Mayor Eric J. Kellogg pledged to issue Thursday is the latest episode in an intra-government spat over the range, which, depending on whom you ask, is either a safe facility used for law enforcement training or a grave danger to those nearby.

Kellogg said he sent police earlier this year to close the facility, but the range continued to operate after the park district took the city to court. After residents complained of bullets landing in their yards at a city council meeting earlier this week, Kellogg said he sent his police chief to investigate. Kellogg said he decided to intervene after the police chief found bullets.

“When residents have bullets lodged in their homes, I believe this is negligent and dangerous,” Kellogg said. “I think by closing the facility, it gives the residents an opportunity to exercise the freedoms of their home. They can live, rest and play on their properties.”

But Rick Hammond, attorney for the Harvey Park District, said the facility that his agency leases to a private security company is safe.

“There have been no incidents whatsoever and this is the second time in six months that the city of Harvey is trying to exert inappropriate authority over the Harvey Park District,” Hammond said.

The land in the 15300 block of South Campbell has been leased for use as a gun range for about a year, said John Howard, director of operations for the U.S. Investigations and Protection Agency, the private company that operates the gun range.

7 dead in California shooting rampage

Seven people, including a suspected shooter, died when a man opened fire from a slow-moving car Friday night in a small Southern California college town, a rampage that authorities believe to be "premeditated mass murder," Santa Barbara County sheriff's deputies said Saturday.

The shootings occurred in Isla Vista near the University of California-Santa Barbara. Seven people also were being treated in a hospital for gunshot wounds or traumatic injuries, including at least one who was in surgery, said sheriff's office spokeswoman Kelly Hoover.

"The sheriff's office has obtained and is currently analyzing written and video evidence that suggests this was a premeditated mass murder," Hoover said.

Hoover apparently was referring to a YouTube video titled "Retribution" posted by a young man, CNN affiliate KEYT-TV reported. In the nearly seven-minute video, the young man rants about women who ignored or rejected him over the past eight years and warns that he will "punish you all for it."

The violence began and ended within minutes, from 9:27 p.m. when shots were reported to around 10 minutes later when police discovered the body of the suspected gunman, whom authorities described as mentally disturbed, CNN affiliate KEYT-TV said. Police said there were nine separate crime scenes.

"Sheriff's deputies responded and found several victims suffering from gunshot wounds. As sheriff's deputies were attending to the victims and performing first aid, they were also receiving suspect information. Only minutes later, there were additional reports of shots fired in several other areas of Isla Vista," Hoover said.

U.S. law enforcement officials said the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and FBI were assisting local police in the investigation, including trying to trace the handgun used and where the possible suspect obtained it.

Robert Johnson told CNN he was standing on a corner when he heard what he thought were fireworks. Then a black BMW with tinted windows drove by and either slowed down or stopped outside a deli where as many as eight people were eating outside. Someone in the car opened fire.

Woman kept in booby-trapped home as sex slave

Oscar Ayala-Arizmendi, 36, was charged with first-degree kidnapping, rape and possession of a controlled substance, according to the (Twin Falls, Idaho) Times-News.
TWIN FALLS, Idaho (USA TODAY) — An Idaho man is accused of keeping a woman as a sex slave for 18 months in a home that was boarded up and booby trapped with electrical wire, authorities said.
Oscar Ayala-Arizmendi, 36, was charged with first-degree kidnapping, rape and possession of a controlled substance, according to the (Twin Falls, Idaho) Times-News. Bail was set Wednesday in Twin Falls County Magistrate Court at $1 million and likely will be moved to 5th District Court.

The 27-year-old woman escaped April 8 from a house in Buhl, a town of about 5,000 residents, and made a report April 26 after she was arrested on a drug charge and in jail, authorities say. The victim is not being identified because of the nature of the accusations.

She told police that Ayala-Arizmendi forced her to use methamphetamine, sometimes held a gun to her head, beat her with a 2-by-4, and often placed a rope around her neck to lead her around the house like a dog. The suspect moved her to two houses in the town and raped her multiple times.

Aaron Hernandez - From Football Star to Jail bars

(CNN) -- Ex-New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the July 2012 killings of two men in Boston, authorities said Thursday.

Hernandez, 24, could be arraigned as early as next week. He's currently in jail awaiting trial in a separate case: the 2013 slaying of a semipro football player.

Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel Conley told reporters at a news conference Thursday that a grand jury returned the indictments in the shooting deaths of Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado.
"Mr. de Abreu and Mr. Furtado were ambushed and executed as they drove home along Shawmut Avenue in Boston's South End in the early morning hours of July 16, 2012," Conley said.

In addition to the two counts of first-degree murder, Hernandez also has been charged with three counts of armed assault with intent to murder and one count of assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon, the district attorney added.

Fossils Show Long-necked Dino Survived Jurassic era

Diplodocid Sauropods
Diplodocid Sauropods

Scientists say fossils found in Argentina's Patagonia region provide the first evidence that a family of long-necked, whip-tailed dinosaurs survived beyond the Jurassic period, when they were thought to have gone extinct.

The find suggests Diplodocid Sauropods roamed South America during the early Cretaceous era. It also suggests they evolved from other dinosaurs before the Earth's continents split apart, which is earlier than previously thought.

Pablo Gallina and his team of Argentine paleontologists say the 19 vertebrae they recovered belong to a new species of Diplodocid they named "Leikupal laticauda."
That's a combination of native Mapuche words for "vanishing" and "family" and Latin for "wide" and "tail."
The team held a news conference in Buenos Aires Thursday after their conclusions were published in the PLOS ONE journal: http://tinyurl.com/lds49sr

Missouri lawmakers pass 3-day abortion wait period

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Missouri's Republican-controlled Legislature gave final approval Wednesday to legislation requiring a woman to wait three days after first seeing a doctor before having an abortion. Democratic Gov. Jay Nixon has not said whether he will sign or veto it.

The measure would triple Missouri's current 24-hour waiting period and put the state in line with Utah and South Dakota as the only states to mandate a 72-hour time frame. Missouri currently has only one clinic performing elective abortions.

The House voted 111-39 in favor of the measure Wednesday, sending it to Nixon, who has previously allowed other abortion restrictions to become law without his signature. That included a measure last year that requires doctors to be in the room for the initial dose of a drug used in medical abortions.

Nixon said Tuesday that he would review the extended waiting period and act in a manner consistent with his other actions on abortion legislation.

At 1:10 p.m. Monday, a 2-year-old boy and 1-year-old girl were playing in their front yard with their mother in the 1700 block of Burr Ridge Drive when a woman allegedly approached the children and beat them with a screwdriver, police said.

"It's just crazy and luckily, we got her off the street," said Hoffman Estates Police Sgt. Darin Felgenhauer.

The children were not seriously hurt and were not hospitalized, police said. The screwdriver did not cut into them.

Hospital Workers Exposed to MERS Virus

Yikes!

MERS = Middle East Respiratory Syndrome

A man with Middle East Respiratory Syndrome may have exposed 100 people to the deadly MERS virus at two Florida hospitals, health officials said today.
The 44-year-old man, who works as a healthcare provider in Saudi Arabia, was admitted to Dr. P. Phillips Hospital in Orlando May 8, a week after developing symptoms of MERS mid-flight from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia to London.
The man, whose name and nationality have not been released, traveled through Boston and Atlanta before arriving in Orlando, where he was visiting family, officials said.
“He is in good condition and is continuing to improve,” the hospital said in a statement, adding that prior to the man’s hospitalization, he accompanied another patient to Orlando Regional Medical Center May 5

At least 20 hospital workers who were in contact with the man at Dr. P. Phillips Hospital and Orlando Regional Medical Center have been placed in home isolation for the virus’s 14-day incubation period and are awaiting MERS test results.

The U.S. is the latest of 15 countries to report cases of MERS. Saudi Arabia, which is ground zero for the outbreak, has reported 495 cases and 152 deaths related to SARS-like virus.

Health officials are not recommending that anyone change their travel plans at this time, but signs distributed to 22 U.S. airports urge people traveling to the Arabian Peninsula to avoid close contact with sick people, wash their hands often and call a doctor if they develop a fever, cough or shortness of breath within 14 days of their trip.

Man claims his father was Zodiac Killer

(CNN) -- A Louisiana man claims in a new book that his biological father was the notorious Zodiac Killer of northern California, who's still sought by authorities, publisher HarperCollins said Tuesday.
The Zodiac serial killer is believed to have killed five people in 1968-69 and gained notoriety by writing several letters to police boasting of the slayings, with swatches of bloody clothing as proof of his claims. The serial killer claimed to have killed as many as 37 people and has never been caught.
Now Gary L. Stewart, a vice president at the cleaning company Delta Tech Service in Baton Rouge, is recounting his decade-long search for his biological father and has concluded that man -- Earl Van Best, Jr., who's now dead -- was the Zodiac Killer, the publisher said.
On Tuesday, police in northern California said they weren't aware of the book or its claims.

"It's an open and active case, so we don't comment," San Francisco police spokesman Albie Esparza told CNN. "But (it's) certainly something our homicide investigators will take a look at."

The unsolved Zodiac Killer case inspired the 2007 film "Zodiac", starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey Jr. and Mark Ruffalo.
